first discovered in Leigh Woods by botanist Martha Maria Atwood in 1852
research has exposed a very delicate reproductive system and ongoing evolution among this rare Sorbus species
population estimated at around 300 individuals in 2016 and increasing by about 10% per decade
oldest known tree is around 240 years old with many others over 100 years old
